How the 2026 Ram 1500 4WD System Works

The Ram 1500's four-wheel drive system delivers engine power to all four wheels simultaneously, dramatically improving traction and control in challenging conditions. In standard two-wheel drive, power goes to the rear wheels only, which is efficient for everyday driving on dry pavement. Engage four-wheel drive and the system sends torque to both the front and rear axles, helping the truck maintain grip on mud, snow, gravel, sand, and uneven terrain.

The system is controlled through a dial or dash-mounted controls, depending on the trim, and depending on your configuration, you have access to up to five distinct driving modes.

2026 Ram 1500 4WD Modes: What Each One Does

2WD — Two-Wheel Drive

This is the standard mode for everyday driving on dry, hard-surface roads. Power goes to the rear wheels only, which is the most fuel-efficient setup for normal commuting and highway driving. When conditions are good, this is where you'll spend most of your time.

4WD Auto — Four-Wheel Drive Automatic

If your Ram is equipped with this mode, it's the ideal setting for unpredictable or changing weather conditions — the kind of driving Ontario throws at you regularly. In 4WD Auto, the system defaults to rear-wheel drive but automatically engages four-wheel drive the moment it detects wheel slip or loss of traction. You don't have to think about it — the truck handles it for you. This is a great everyday setting during shoulder seasons when conditions can shift quickly.

4WD High — Four-Wheel Drive High

This mode sends power to all four wheels continuously, making it the go-to choice for loose, slippery surfaces where you know traction will be compromised like heavy snow, ice, mud, sand, or loose gravel. It's designed for normal driving speeds and is the mode most people will reach for during a Canadian winter. You can shift into and out of 4WD High while the truck is moving, though momentarily releasing the accelerator after using the control switch helps the transfer case engage more smoothly.

4WD Lock — Four-Wheel Drive Lock

When 4WD High isn't enough, 4WD Lock goes further by ensuring equal power distribution between the front and rear wheels at all times, regardless of what the system detects. Unlike Auto mode, which can shift dynamically, Lock keeps all four wheels working together as a unit. This is the setting for the most demanding conditions — deep mud, heavy snow, or rough trails where you need maximum, consistent traction without the system making any independent decisions.

4WD Low — Four-Wheel Drive Low

This is the Ram's most powerful traction mode, designed specifically for very slow-speed, high-demand situations. 4WD Low engages a lower gear ratio through the transfer case, multiplying the engine's torque output for maximum pulling and climbing ability. It's the right choice for steep off-road grades, deep sand or snow, rock crawling, or heavy low-speed towing in challenging terrain. One important rule: do not exceed 40 km/h when 4WD Low is engaged.

To shift into 4WD Low while moving, slow down to 3–5 km/h, put the transmission in Neutral, then select 4WD Low while still rolling. If performing the shift while stopped, put the ignition in the On/Run position, shift to Neutral, select 4WD Low, then shift back into gear. Some gear noise during this shift is completely normal.

Neutral

The transfer case's neutral position disengages both the front and rear driveshafts entirely. This setting is used specifically for flat towing the Ram 1500 behind another vehicle; it is not a driving mode.

Ram 1500 4WD Important Notes

The Ram's 4WD system is designed to shift between 2WD and 4WD Auto, High, or Lock, whether the truck is stopped or moving. However, the transfer case engages faster and more smoothly if you briefly release the accelerator after using the control switch. The system will not shift between 2WD and 4WD if the front or rear wheels are already spinning. The wheels need to have traction to complete the shift. If you're stuck and spinning, you'll need to stop the wheel spin first before changing modes.

Also, keep in mind that while On is the required ignition position for most shifts, the engine doesn't need to be running. You cannot perform these shifts with the ignition in the ACC (Accessories) position.

Which Ram 1500 Trims Offer 4WD?

Four-wheel drive is available across the entire Ram 1500 lineup, from the work-focused Tradesman to premium trims like the Tungsten and performance-focused RHO.

The RHO stands out as the most off-road capable model, featuring a full-time BorgWarner transfer case with 4WD Auto, High, and Low, along with a Dana 60 rear axle with an electronic locking differential, long-travel suspension, and 35-inch all-terrain tires. It’s built to handle serious terrain without compromise.

The Rebel is another strong option for off-road buyers, adding an electronic locking rear axle, Selec-Speed Control, off-road-tuned suspension, skid plates, and a raised ride height, giving it real capability while still keeping everyday usability in check.
